WELCOME ON MY BOARD
The rain didnxt just fall; it hammered, drowning out the world until the only sound was the rhythmic, hungry chugging of the freight train. I didnxt see the red light until the metal beast was three feet away.xxxxThere was no time to scream.xxxxThe impact wasnxt a crash; it was a wet, sickening crunch that vibrated through my teeth. The world spun into a blur of gray steel and dark water. I felt a searing, white-hot tear, a sensation like my body being pulled apart from the hips down, before the darkness swallowed me whole.xxxxWhen I woke, the silence was worse than the noise. I tried to kick my legs, a reflex born of panic, but there was nothing. No weight, no movement, just a terrifying, hollow lightness under the thin hospital blanket. The smell of antiseptic couldnxt mask the copper scent of blood that seemed to cling to my memory.xxxxPanic clawed at my throat. I was a ghost in my own body, trapped in a room that felt too bright, too loud, too cruel. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the end, waiting for the pain to return.xxxxThen, I felt it. A cold draft, but not from the window. Something soft brushed against my hand.xxxxI opened my eyes. There was no one in the room. The door was locked. Yet, on the bedside table, a glass of water I hadnxt noticed before was suddenly full and cool. A heavy blanket, which had slipped away in my thrashing, was tucked tightly around my shoulders, warm and precise, as if by invisible hands.xxxxA whispered voice, faint as a dying ember, seemed to drift from the corner of the room. xYou are not alone. Rest now.xxxxxI froze. The terror of the accident was still there, a cold stone in my chest, but the crushing loneliness vanished. The room felt less like a prison and more like a sanctuary. I didnxt know who, or what, was watching over me, but as the pain began to dull into a manageable throb, I realized the mercy was already there. Something unseen had caught me when the world let go.xxxxI closed my eyes, no longer fighting the dark, and for the first time since the train, I slept.
